Andrew Guest, the creator of the upcoming Marvel series Wonder Man, has publicly addressed fan sentiment following news of the show's cancellation and star Mahershala Ali's criticisms regarding the handling of the Blade project. The acknowledgment comes amidst fan backlash on social media, with many expressing disappointment and concern over Marvel's direction, particularly concerning projects featuring Black actors.
Fans have pointed to a series of recent projects as evidence of a larger issue. The Don Cheadle-starring Armor Wars has not yet been released since its announcement in 2020. Ironheart's launch was delayed until 2025, despite finishing filming in 2022. Samuel L. Jackson's Secret Invasion series, intended as a solo project for Nick Fury, received some of the lowest ratings for Marvel content and has no announced plans for Fury's return. Anthony Mackie's Brave New World faced criticism after a six-year wait following his ascension to Captain America, and Monica Rambeau has been notably absent from Avengers: Doomsday marketing following her appearance in The Marvels.
While other Marvel projects like Thor: Love & Thunder and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania have also faced criticism or underperformed, fans have specifically highlighted the aforementioned projects as a pattern. Guest stated in a video shared on TikTok that he has been listening to the feedback and appreciates the fan engagement. He acknowledged that "important conversations are being had online about the kind of stories we're prioritizing and the kind of shows that platforms want to make."
The future of Marvel's live-action Disney+ series remains uncertain, with only Vision Quest and Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 confirmed for release, both of which have already been filmed. Similarly, Star Wars has no further confirmed series after Ahsoka Season 2. On the film side, Marvel has Black Panther 3 and a Ryan Gosling-starring Ghost Rider slated for 2028, following Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. A third release date in 2028 is also reserved, likely for the X-Men reboot.
