After two years, Marvel Rivals has significantly reworked Black Widow, aiming to align her gameplay with her established persona in Marvel comics. The update, part of Season 9 which launched on July 10, overhauls the hero shooter's iteration of the character, transforming her into an agile burst damage dealer.
The most substantial change removes Black Widow's aim-down-sights sniper mode from her primary kit, reintroducing it as an upgraded ultimate. While still not capable of one-shot kills, her scoped shots now deal increased damage, are easier to land due to larger hitboxes, and can pierce enemies. Her previous ultimate, a charged pulse shot, has been integrated into her standard abilities. The sprinting stamina meter has also been removed, allowing for constant dashing and empowered leaps. Complementing this airborne mobility is a new ability: while airborne, Black Widow can activate special gauntlets to perform a ground slam that deals area-of-effect damage upon landing.
This rework positions Black Widow as a flanker, emphasizing quick repositioning and precision strikes. Her enhanced mobility allows for rapid assaults on enemy formations, particularly targeting weaker or fleeing opponents. The ability to dive into enemy lines and execute a ground smash, then disengage, offers a high-risk, high-reward playstyle. While her primary attack now features a faster rate of fire, maintaining accuracy remains crucial. However, well-placed piercing scoped shots can still prove devastating to grouped enemies.
These changes have notably increased Black Widow's damage output. Post-rework, her performance in matches has been comparable to other strong damage dealers, with players achieving significant damage totals even with moderate accuracy. Improved accuracy is expected to yield even higher damage figures.
Beyond gameplay enhancements, the rework also brings Black Widow's kit in Marvel Rivals closer to her comic book origins. Previously, her role as a sniper felt incongruous with her portrayal as a spy, gymnast, and skilled combatant whose defining features were often her gadgets and close-quarters prowess, not long-range sniping. The new design better reflects her history as a versatile operative.
NetEase has stated that the design philosophy avoids one-shot kills to maintain a more accessible experience for players on the receiving end. Even with the rework, Black Widow's ultimate remains a powerful but not instantly lethal attack. Before this update, players found that even skilled Black Widow players struggled to match the elimination rates of other characters, partly due to her slow primary fire and melee attacks, and long cooldowns. The current iteration aims to rectify these issues, making her a more consistently viable and enjoyable character to play.
