Marvel Rivals is launching its ninth season, "The Mystery of Thebes," introducing new playable characters Jubilee and The Hood. This update brings substantial changes, including a complete rework of the game's signature Team-Up system and a significant overhaul of Black Widow's abilities. The season is set to begin on Friday, July 10.

Black Widow, previously considered the least powerful character on the roster, has undergone a complete redesign. Her damage output has been reduced, but her fire rate has been substantially increased, shifting her playstyle towards a mid-range, semi-automatic feel. Her former ultimate ability is now a standard skill, and the stamina costs for sprinting and super jumping have been removed. She gains a new ability that propels her towards enemies for a ground slam attack. Her new ultimate allows her to enter a scoped mode, transforming her rifle back into a powerful sniper with increased damage, a larger hitbox, and the ability to pierce enemies. While this new sniper functionality does not one-shot opponents, it requires less precision and lasts for 20 seconds or until all six shots are expended.

The Team-Up system, a core mechanic in Marvel Rivals that provides buffs or new abilities when compatible characters are paired on the same team, has been fundamentally redesigned. Developers have acknowledged that the previous iteration had become "uninspired." The new system grants every hero two independent Team-Up Ability loadouts. These loadouts can be swapped before matches, between rounds, or after respawning.

Each Team-Up now features a base effect and an enhanced effect. The base effect is active regardless of whether the designated partner is on the player's team. If the compatible partner is present, the ability gains its enhanced effect, offering a significant power boost or alternate functionalities. For instance, Hulk's new Team-Up with Captain America, "Incredible Leap," allows him to perform a ground slam that damages nearby enemies and reduces cooldowns based on his depleted health. If Captain America is on the same team, the enhanced effect increases the damage of "Incredible Leap" and applies a debuff that makes affected enemies take more damage.

Creative director Guangguang stated that the planning for the Team-Up overhaul began nearly a year ago, driven by community feedback. The development team will be closely monitoring the interactions of the new Team-Up abilities and is prepared to implement rapid balance patches if necessary. These changes are expected to affect approximately 80% of the game's characters.
