Microsoft's recent restructuring of its Xbox division has cast a shadow over Arkane Lyon and its highly anticipated title, Marvel's Blade. The shake-up, which includes layoffs impacting thousands of employees and the closure or reassignment of four studios, has prompted remaining studios to refocus on established franchises. However, the exact fate of Arkane Lyon and its in-development Marvel's Blade game is currently unclear.
Arkane Lyon is reportedly undergoing a "consultation" process, a step influenced by local labor laws in France. This process involves a "review of potential strategic options" for the studio. The outcome of this consultation could lead to various possibilities, including Arkane Lyon being sold off, similar to Undead Labs and Ninja Theory, or even a potential closure, a fate that befell its sister studio Arkane Austin last year. Notably, Arkane co-founder Raphael Colantonio humorously inquired about the cost to purchase the studio from Xbox, hinting at a desire for the studio to regain its independence.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the studio, there is evidence to suggest that Marvel's Blade will proceed, though its final form and release timeline are subject to change. Microsoft has explicitly stated that none of its "first party publicly announced games or projects are being cancelled as part of these reductions." This indicates that Blade is likely safe from outright cancellation.
However, the project has faced internal challenges. Reports indicate that Marvel's Blade was already over-budget and had experienced an internal delay, pushing its expected release from 2026 to 2027. Bethesda Game Studios head Todd Howard recently expressed his positive impression of the game after a recent viewing, noting that the Arkane Lyon team is "doing a really, really great job."
Beyond a few pieces of concept art and a financial document revealing that Marvel's Blade only entered full production in late 2024, details about the game remain scarce. Originally announced in 2023, the game is set to feature Eric Cross Brookes (Blade) confronting a supernatural emergency in a quarantined section of Paris, aiming to contain a vampire scourge. The outcome of the ongoing consultation process will significantly influence the future of both Arkane Lyon and its ambitious vampire-action title.
