Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is a Hidden Gem That Was Undercut by Avengers' Failure

Five years after its release, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy stands as a testament to what a superhero game can be when it prioritizes character and narrative over live-service mechanics. Developed by Eidos-Montréal, the game arrived under the shadow of its predecessor, Crystal Dynamics’ critically panned Marvel's Avengers. While Avengers struggled with repetitive combat and a focus on grinding, Guardians of the Galaxy offered a refreshing, character-driven experience that exceeded expectations, even if it fell short of publisher Square Enix's sales targets.

Guardians of the Galaxy successfully captured the spirit of its titular team, including Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket, Groot, and Drax. Beyond the core crew, the game introduced lesser-known characters like Lady Hellbender and provided depth to established figures. The narrative skillfully balanced high-stakes intergalactic threats with intimate character studies, particularly focusing on Peter Quill's internal struggles. One significant plot thread explores Quill's potential paternity of his ex-flame's daughter, Nikki, leading to poignant moments and a deeper understanding of his character.

The game's strengths lie in its rich character writing, extending to supporting figures like Adam Warlock, whose distinctive dialogue and Cosmo the dog, a fan-favorite, further enrich the experience. Gameplay mechanics also shine, with Star-Lord commanding his teammates in a style reminiscent of Mass Effect. The combat system encourages strategic use of each Guardian's unique abilities, culminating in exhilarating moments where Star-Lord rallies his team with an '80s-inspired power-up. The soundtrack, featuring original tracks by the fictional band "Star-Lord," complements the game's energetic tone.

Despite critical acclaim and a strong narrative, Guardians of the Galaxy did not meet Square Enix's commercial expectations. Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda noted in a statement that the game's launch sales "undershot our initial expectations." While the game has since reached over 8 million players, it remains unclear how many of those were direct sales versus players who accessed it through subscription services like Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus.

The development studio behind the game, Eidos-Montréal, was acquired by Embracer Group in 2022 and has since undergone restructuring, contributing to projects like Playground Games' Fable and Obsidian Entertainment's Grounded 2, rather than leading its own major development. This situation casts a shadow over the future of standalone titles from the studio, making Guardians of the Galaxy a potentially singular achievement in its recent history.

It's a disservice to the quality of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy that it didn't achieve greater commercial success, especially when compared to other acclaimed superhero titles like Insomniac's Spider-Man series. With its compelling characters, engaging gameplay, and memorable soundtrack, the game deserves recognition as one of the standout superhero experiences available today.
