Marvel is launching its new horror-centric "Midnight Universe" imprint with a drastically reimagined take on its most iconic hero in Midnight Spider-Man. This new series, penned by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, aims to infuse classic Marvel characters with elements of horror, moving away from traditional supernatural figures to recontextualize established heroes.

Johnson explained that the core directive for the Midnight Universe was to place "horror in the front seat, superhero very much in the back." He approaches the series like a creator-owned horror title, preserving the essence of Spider-Man's story but retelling it with a focus on atmosphere, concept, and thematic relevance, in addition to horrifying imagery. This approach aims to deliver something fundamentally new, rather than simply applying a "Midnight" label to existing horror-oriented characters.

Unlike the Ultimate universe's more linear progression, the creative teams behind Midnight Spider-Man, Midnight X-Men, and Midnight Fantastic Four are engaged in a collaborative process. Johnson, along with co-writers Jonathan Hickman and Benjamin Percy, maintains near-daily communication, sharing scripts and artwork to ensure a cohesive yet individually strong narrative across the titles.

The transformation of Peter Parker in Midnight Spider-Man is a significant departure from the original. The bite from a radioactive spider initiates a prolonged and agonizing physical metamorphosis, with an oversized arachnid fused to his chest. Johnson described the escalating body horror as extreme, promising that the series will explore new terrifying avenues as Peter grapples with the mystery of his condition. Influences for the series' visual and thematic style include the films of David Cronenberg, John Carpenter, and Guillermo Del Toro, as well as H.R. Giger's biomechanical designs. In comics, inspirations range from horror manga like Junji Ito's work, Homunculus, Parasyte, and Chainsaw Man, to Western titles such as the Beowulf adaptation by Garcia/Rubin and Bendis' Powers.

Johnson also highlighted the impact of artist ScieTronc's work, noting that his detailed and dynamic style, influenced by manga, has shaped the writing. The series will also delve into a reinterpretation of Spider-Man's central theme of power and responsibility, proposing that "POWER MAKES MONSTERS" in the current societal landscape. Midnight Spider-Man will explore Peter Parker's struggle to retain his humanity as his immense power inevitably transforms him in horrific ways.

Midnight Spider-Man #1, Midnight X-Men #1, and Midnight Fantastic Four #1 are all slated for release on October 7, 2026.
