Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has experienced a substantial sales boost, with an estimated 316,000 additional copies sold on PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam since the release of the film "Spider-Man: Brand New Day." This surge, driven by the movie's box office success, generated approximately $11 million in revenue.
According to data estimates from Alinea Analytics, 20% of the copies sold during this period were physical. Additionally, 274,000 players accessed the game through the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog for Extra and Premium tiers. These figures bring the total sales of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 to 18.2 million units, with 92% of those sales on PS5, and have contributed to over $1.2 billion in total revenue since the game's launch.
Rhys Elliot, head of market analysis at Alinea, noted that while some strategic discounts played a role, the primary driver for the sales increase was the hype surrounding the film. Data indicates the game is selling around 15,000 copies per day on PS5 at its current price point of $29.39, a significant increase compared to the roughly 6,300 units sold daily during a February promotion. Sales on PC, where the game is priced at $40, also saw an uptick.
Insomniac Games has also introduced content related to the film, including a PlayStation 5 Pro update and the "Fresh Start" costume, mirroring the movie's aesthetic. The film itself drew inspiration from the game, with actors and directors incorporating stylish finishers seen in the video game into its action sequences. "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has also performed strongly at the box office, with projections suggesting it could surpass $2 billion globally.
Elliot commented on the potential for similar cross-promotional successes with other upcoming video game movie adaptations, such as the planned Legend of Zelda film. He suggested that such lifts often occur organically rather than through deliberate planning, citing the unpredictable nature of game and movie development cycles. However, for publishers involved in both game and film production within the same intellectual property, there remains a potential for strategically timed releases to generate significant synergistic impact.
