Liam McIntyre, who voices the titular mutant in Insomniac Games' upcoming Marvel's Wolverine, has shared insights into the performance that caused apprehension among the development team. The actor explained that embodying Wolverine's feral berserker state required him to explore a level of ferocity that, while ultimately embraced by the studio, was initially unsettling.
McIntyre initially considered drawing inspiration from content depicting rabid dogs, a notion he acknowledged was difficult to find and likely for the best. However, his commitment to portraying the character's "seeing red" moment led to a performance that, as he told EW, "terrified the team at Insomniac Games."
"I guess that's good, right? Being terrifying," McIntyre commented. "But, suddenly, I was like, 'I'm really scared to go all out with this,' but they're such a good team that you feel safe. They will help me if it's not gonna work. They will tell me. They won't just let it happen. So I got to take some really huge swings with my character as a result of being able to trust them so much."
Animation director Brian Wyser and narrative director Walt Williams corroborated that McIntyre delivered a "raw" performance that captured not only the expected rage but also the underlying humanity of Wolverine. They noted that the character's deep-seated pain and anger stem from a history of hurt and emotional suppression.
"You don't have that level of rage or pain if you don't have a genuinely deep yearning, caring heart inside of you," Williams stated, highlighting the nuanced portrayal sought by the studio.
Marvel's Wolverine is set to release on September 15 for PlayStation 5. The game's narrative follows Wolverine as he reunites with Team X to thwart Sentinel creator Bolivar Trask's plans to abduct mutants globally. In a world preceding the formation of the X-Men, Wolverine will confront formidable adversaries such as the ninja death-cult The Hand and the cybernetic Reavers.
