Director Mike Daly of Insomniac Games' upcoming Marvel's Wolverine has addressed the recent online backlash following an extended gameplay showcase. The July 2026 presentation offered players a glimpse into story elements, character interactions, traversal, combat, and a Sentinel boss fight. However, the footage quickly became a target for online criticism, with viral posts highlighting specific aspects.

Key points of contention included Logan following a red scent trail to locate enemies, which drew comparisons to in-game guidance systems in other titles. Additionally, an argument between Wolverine and Sabertooth received criticism for its voice acting. The Sentinel boss fight also sparked debate, with some players drawing parallels to boss encounters in older games, including the 2007 PS2 title Ben 10: Protector of Earth and the 2009 X-Men Origins: Wolverine game, with some suggesting the older titles featured more compelling boss designs.

Daly, speaking with TheGamer, expressed a calm acceptance of the criticism, viewing it as a natural byproduct of developing games based on popular characters. He described the studio as "pretty used to" such reactions, calling them a "good problem to have" and noting that critics will often "find stuff to complain about" regardless of a game's quality. Daly emphasized that Insomniac's primary objective was to create the best possible game for the character, rather than necessarily appeasing every fan criticism.

Despite the online discourse, early hands-on impressions from IGN were largely positive. IGN's Mitchell Saltzman commented that Wolverine's combat "absolutely nails the spirit of Wolverine and is very fundamentally sound." While Saltzman was impressed with the gameplay, he acknowledged that it remains to be seen if the mechanics will maintain their engagement throughout the entire game.

Marvel's Wolverine is slated for release on September 15, 2026, exclusively for the PlayStation 5.
