Insomniac Games' anticipated title, Marvel's Wolverine, has received an M for Mature 17+ rating from the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). The rating summary indicates the game will feature blood and gore, drug reference, intense violence, partial nudity, and strong language. These elements contribute to a gameplay experience described as a "frantic combat" scenario.

The ESRB's detailed description notes that players will assume the role of James Logan, also known as Wolverine, as he reunites with Team X to combat a significant threat. Gameplay will unfold from a third-person perspective, where players utilize melee attacks and special skills to defeat enemies. Wolverine's signature claws will be central to combat, allowing for slashing and stabbing, with rage modes enabling faster, more destructive combos and slow-motion finishers, such as dramatic finishing moves like stabbing an enemy in the head.

Combat sequences are highlighted by frequent blood-splatter effects, audible screams of pain, and instances of dismemberment and decapitation. Battlefields may be strewn with the remains of fallen enemies, and cutscenes can also depict graphic violence, including characters tearing enemies apart or decapitating them. The rating specifically mentions "a handful of sequences" that briefly depict "a character's exposed buttocks." Beyond the partial nudity and violence, the game's dialogue will include references to drugs, with one example given as "It doubled my production of fentanyl."

Pre-release footage for Marvel's Wolverine has already suggested a particularly violent interpretation of the classic X-Men character, with gameplay clips showcasing the ability to dismember foes. The game is scheduled to launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026. This title marks a departure in tone for Insomniac Games, known for its work on the Marvel's Spider-Man series.
