Marvel's Wolverine Exceeds Expectations in Early Sales, Outpacing Major Titles

Marvel's Wolverine has achieved strong initial sales in its first three days, positioning it as one of the PlayStation 5's top-grossing games of 2026, according to market data firm Alinea Analytics. The exclusive title is reportedly selling faster than anticipated, surpassing the initial performance of Sony's other major upcoming releases like Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yotei.

Rhys Elliott, head of market research at Alinea Analytics, noted on X that despite social media's tendency to amplify negativity, the game's commercial performance is robust. "The situation is that Wolverine is now the #6 top-grossing PS5 game of the year, despite only being on the market for a few days," Elliott stated.

Alinea Analytics estimates Wolverine's three-day revenue at approximately $130 million, which translates to roughly 1.9 million units sold for the PlayStation 5 exclusive. This figure places it ahead of several other significant PlayStation Studios launches in their initial three-day revenue.

Compared to recent first-party titles, Wolverine's estimated three-day revenue of $130 million significantly outperforms: Ghost of Yōtei ($121.9 million), Death Stranding 2 ($51.7 million), Astro Bot ($34.6 million), Stellar Blade ($32.7 million), Rise of the Ronin ($25.7 million), and Helldivers 2 ($18.9 million). Only Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is noted as having a stronger launch, a difference attributed to the characters' relative popularity.

This performance is particularly noteworthy given the mixed reception and criticisms some players have raised regarding elements like quick-time events, objective markers, and other on-rails gameplay mechanics. Despite these controversies and a modest aggregate score on Metacritic, Wolverine's commercial momentum suggests a strong player base.

The long-term sales trajectory of Marvel's Wolverine remains to be seen as more players engage with the game. However, its initial success offers a potential indicator of the current health and sustainability of Sony's established blockbuster model for first-party exclusives. Such titles are crucial for driving console sales and encouraging hardware upgrades, especially as the industry looks toward a potentially expensive PlayStation 6 generation.
