Insomniac Games has released a surprise hotfix for Marvel's Wolverine that addresses the game's controversial scent trail mechanic, colloquially referred to by some players as 'fart gas'. The update, which went live on September 19, reduces the opacity of these visual cues that guide players toward objectives.
Scent Trail Adjustments
The patch notes state that the hotfix "adjusts the presentation of the Scent Trails and Audio Sense indicators, including reduced opacity to make these visuals less intense." Furthermore, the developer indicated that the team "continues to evaluate ways to further improve Senses in the game, including exploring toggleable options for a future update." This suggests that players may eventually have the ability to turn the feature off completely.
Following the update, players have shared comparisons showing the visual changes. The formerly neon gas trails have been replaced by pools of ambient color on the ground, making the visual guidance less intrusive. While the trails still indicate the correct path, their presentation is now more subdued.
Game Focus Remains on Combat
The scent trail feature had become a point of discussion even before the game's launch. However, the article suggests that the impact of this mechanic, or its potential removal, is minor in the context of the overall game. Marvel's Wolverine is described as a combat-focused action-adventure title centered on intense encounters and progressing through to unlock cinematic cutscenes, rather than an exploration-heavy open-world experience. Its core gameplay loop is not significantly altered by the presence or absence of the scent trails.
