Marvel's Wolverine Performs Well Commercially Despite Mixed Reception

Marvel's Wolverine has demonstrated surprising commercial resilience, securing a respectable position on PlayStation's weekly active user charts despite facing competition from live-service giants and new releases. For the week ending September 19, the game ranked seventh in the US on Circana's chart, a notable achievement for a primarily single-player experience.

This placement positions Marvel's Wolverine between established live-service titles like Marvel Rivals and the enduringly popular Minecraft. According to Circana's engagement tracker, the average player spent 14.2 hours with the game during that week, ranking it among the top 20 titles on PlayStation for engagement. This is a significant feat for a game that, unlike its open-world predecessor Marvel's Spider-Man, offers a more focused, shorter experience often completed within a week, with a New Game Plus mode providing the primary replay incentive.

While Sony has not released official sales figures, industry analysis suggests strong performance. Alinea Analytics estimates that Marvel's Wolverine sold through 1.9 million units by September 18. Rhys Elliott of Alinea Analytics noted that while the game's "commercial long tail is limited by its mixed media and streamer reception," it is expected to see future sales boosts from Marvel Cinematic Universe tie-ins, holiday gifting, and new PlayStation 5 owners seeking graphically impressive titles. The analysis suggests that a large segment of the mainstream audience will purchase the game based on brand recognition alone, irrespective of online discourse or reviews.

Upon its release on September 15, Marvel's Wolverine reportedly exceeded the lifetime sales of Death Stranding 2 on PS5 within its initial days. GameSpot's review awarded the game an 8/10, describing it as "fun but forgettable."
