Marvel's Wolverine Sells Nearly 2 Million Copies Despite Mixed Reception

Despite facing controversial reviews and online mockery, Marvel's Wolverine has sold approximately 1.9 million copies on PlayStation 5 in its first three days, according to a report from Alinea Analytics. The game has generated upwards of $130 million in revenue so far.

Of the nearly 2 million units sold, a notable 22.9% came from physical editions. This demand for physical media persists even as Sony plans to end disc production for new PlayStation games in 2028. For comparison, Insomniac's previous titles saw a higher percentage of physical sales: Marvel's Spider-Man 2 reported 35% from physical editions, and Astro Bot saw 46% from disc-based copies. Ghost of Yotei's physical split was 37.6%.

It is important to note that the holiday season could still influence these sales figures in the coming weeks and months. However, Wolverine's early success places it above other PlayStation Studios releases this year such as Saros, Marathon, and Marvel's Tokon.

Player data indicates a strong overlap with Insomniac's existing fanbase. The majority of players who purchased Wolverine had previously played Marvel's Spider-Man (82%) and Spider-Man 2 (70%). Additionally, 43% of Wolverine players have also engaged with the hit hero shooter Marvel Rivals.

The game has been the subject of online discussion, with some players mocking its "fart scent" trail mechanic and what some perceive as overly guided design. Eurogamer's review described the game as "just fine." Nevertheless, these criticisms have seemingly had minimal impact on the game's initial commercial performance.
