Insomniac Games has confirmed that Marvel's Wolverine, scheduled for release on PlayStation 5 on September 15th, will be fully playable directly from the game disc. This means players will not need to download the game in its entirety to start playing, a feature that is becoming increasingly rare in modern game releases.
Senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed stated that both digital and physical versions will be available, and the physical copy will function entirely from the disc. However, Insomniac encourages players to download a day-one patch for continued polish and bug fixing. "We would say we're perfectionists," head of technology Mike Fitzgerald added, explaining the team's dedication to refining the game up until its release. "We're gonna squeeze as much out of it as we can."
The clarification comes amidst ongoing controversy surrounding Sony's decision to cease production of PlayStation discs by January 2028. This move has sparked backlash due to concerns about the demise of second-hand sales, the obsolescence of disc drives, and Sony's potential for greater control over game pricing through its digital storefronts. Industry experts have described the decision as being "all about control."
Insomniac itself has experienced the repercussions of this decision, with promotional material for Marvel's Wolverine reportedly being met with negative comments from players unhappy with Sony's disc phase-out. During a preview event, when asked about the community's reaction, Insomniac personnel steered the conversation back to the game itself, emphasizing their focus on the long development process and excitement for players to experience the title. "Today we just want to focus on the game," Fitzgerald remarked.
Marvel's Wolverine is noted to deviate from the design of Insomniac's Spider-Man games, offering a more linear experience without an open city or hub area to explore. The game is also described as being significantly more violent, a characteristic attributed to the nature of the Wolverine character. While characters like Wolverine and Jean Grey will appear, and Spider-Man will have a presence, the X-Men as a team will not be part of this particular interpretation of the character's story. The success of this new approach will be observed, particularly following the considerable success of Insomniac's Spider-Man series.
