Marvel's Wolverine Update Lets Players Turn Off Scent Trails

Insomniac Games has released an update for Marvel's Wolverine that allows players to disable directional assist features, including the often-criticized scent trails. This change aims to address player feedback regarding the game's linearity.

Previously, the game guided players using visual cues like scent trails for collectibles and roots indicating paths in certain trials. While these features ensured players did not get lost, they also contributed to concerns about the game's design feeling overly guided. Players had voiced requests for these directional aids to be made optional.

Following an earlier patch that reduced the visual impact of these senses, update 1.001.006, released on September 25, introduces a dedicated Senses menu within the gameplay settings. Here, players can individually toggle off features such as Whiskey Bottle Scent Trails, Material Crate Audio Clues, and Nightmare Door Roots. Insomniac has clarified that certain "story-critical" senses will remain visible.

The update also includes several bug fixes and performance improvements. Among the addressed issues are game crashes, players becoming stuck in specific mission environments, misaligned claws in photo mode, rare graphical glitches with objects turning white after extended play sessions, and a fix for a UV mapping issue that caused overlapping bathroom signs.

The full patch notes for Marvel's Wolverine Update 1.001.006 are as follows:

  • Adds new on/off Senses toggles for: Whiskey Bottle Scent Trails, Material Crate Audio Clues, Nightmare Door Roots.
  • Addresses several crashes identified through crash logs & the community.
  • Fixes an issue where players could become stuck while sliding down a tree in the "The One That Got Away" mission.
  • Addresses issues with misaligned claws in Photo Mode.
  • Fixes a rare issue where objects may turn white after extended play sessions.
  • Fixes overlapping bathroom sign in the casino caused by a UV mapping issue.

*Story-critical Senses will still appear in the world.
