Marvel's Wolverine Update Narrows 'Fart Gas' Visuals After Player Feedback

Insomniac Games has released an update for Marvel's Wolverine that tones down the game's scent trail visuals, a feature that drew considerable attention and some criticism following the game's reviews. The visual effect, which appears as a trail behind characters Logan follows, was colloquially dubbed "fart gas" by some players and media.

Addressing Player Concerns

The debate surrounding the visual trails intensified after journalists and players began discussing their prominence. While some initial confusion arose regarding whether the trails could be disabled through accessibility options, Insomniac clarified that features like "Chase Assist" do not control these specific visual indicators. The scent trails are intended to represent Logan's canon mutant super senses and tracking abilities, appearing when he is following a scent for story moments or collectibles, according to Insomniac's director of community and marketing, James Stevenson.

Visual Adjustments and Future Options

Following Insomniac's stated intention to "further refine the player experience" based on feedback, the studio has now implemented changes. Update v.01.001.005 reduces the opacity of both scent trails and audio sense indicators, making them less visually intense. The patch notes indicate that Insomniac is also exploring the possibility of adding toggleable options for these features in a future update, which could allow players to completely disable them.

Patch Notes and Sales Performance

The update also addresses some common crashes experienced by a small percentage of players. While official sales figures have not been released by Sony, early data suggests Marvel's Wolverine has sold strongly since launch. The game has also been the subject of player exploration, with some testing its motorcycle sequence and others discovering out-of-bounds areas. Comprehensive guides for the game, covering tips, collectibles, suits, and walkthroughs, are available.
