Insomniac Games has opted not to include the X-Men in its upcoming title, Marvel's Wolverine. Narrative director Walt Williams explained in an interview with IGN that the decision was a deliberate choice to underscore the core theme of mutants existing as outsiders in the Marvel universe.

Instead of focusing on the X-Men, the game will center on Wolverine's early career as a member of Team X, a mutant black ops unit that also included Sabretooth and Lady Deathstrike. While Jean Grey will appear in the game, she will not be depicted as part of the X-Men. This approach aims to remind players that mutants, by their nature, often lack a safe haven and are not celebrated superheroes.

"Superheroes have become so mainstream at this point in just pop culture and everything through TV shows, comics, movies and everything... that they are celebrated. They have parades, they are honored and stuff. But mutants at the core are outsiders, even within the Marvel universe," Williams stated. "We wanted to bring players back to that mindset of that these are characters who exist on the outside. They are not superheroes. They don't have a safe space. They are people who are living in shadow. They are people who are hiding their powers from the world because they are afraid of what would happen if people would discover them."

Williams elaborated that the presence of the X-Men would have provided a sense of safety for mutants, which runs counter to the game's narrative intention. "If we had started this story with the X-Men in existence, there would already be that aspect of a safe place for them. And we wanted to remind people that existence for a mutant is not safe. It's hard. It's scary. And entering that world through Logan, it really felt like the best POV possible."

Wolverine himself is described as an "outsider's outsider," a character who even among mutants feels isolated and keeps others at a distance. This perspective, Insomniac believes, is ideal for introducing players to the mutant world and its inherent challenges. The game will focus on the relationship between Logan and Jean Grey, with Williams confirming that the common comic book love triangle involving Cyclops will not be present. "I think it's safe to say that we are focusing on just Logan and Jean's relationship in Marvel's Wolverine," he said.

This creative direction allows for a more focused narrative on Wolverine's personal journey, potentially leaving room for future games to explore the X-Men in greater depth.
