Marvel Snap is set to receive its most anticipated new feature, a Draft mode, on August 24. This limited-time addition will dramatically alter the game's familiar mechanics, offering players a fresh challenge.
Gameplay Mechanics in Draft Mode
Draft mode begins with players selecting a starter set of three cards, chosen from archetypes such as destroy, ramp, move, or ongoing. Following this initial selection, players will draft seven additional cards. These drafted cards may feature modified cost or power statistics tailored specifically for the Draft mode, or possess "augments" that grant them unique abilities. To achieve victory, players must win five rounds, gradually building their decks with two more cards and further augments as they progress.
Development and Rationale
Developer Second Dinner explained that the substantial gameplay adjustments required for Draft mode were the primary reason for its delayed implementation. This complexity is also why the mode is launching as a limited-time event rather than a permanent fixture. "Snap has a much lower number of cards, you have very small decks, so even the amount of variance you get isn’t super high, as well as the synergy is very high," stated developer Sam Stoddard in an interview. "There’s all these things that were really working against it, and it’s part of why it took so long to eventually get to a place where we were really happy with what we had as an offering."
Stoddard further noted that the limited-time nature of the initial rollout allows the development team to gather extensive player feedback and identify any potential issues. "We have a lot of known unknowns right now. I enjoy the mode a lot, but I designed it. I’ve talked to a lot of other people who enjoy it, but we definitely need to really stress test it with a much larger group of people."
Despite the need for further testing, the introduction of Draft mode represents a significant update for Marvel Snap, which launched in 2022. The game continues to maintain a dedicated community, with a new card being added weekly.
Draft mode will be available on August 24 for the Android, iOS, and Windows PC versions of Marvel Snap. The frequency of its return after the initial event will depend on data gathered from player engagement, though Stoddard indicated that the team aims to bring it back relatively soon to test further variations.
