Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, the tag-team fighting game from Arc System Works, experienced a challenging launch on PC nearly two months ago. While the PlayStation 5 version was met with critical acclaim, PC players encountered numerous performance issues. In response, the development team has released multiple updates, with the first downloadable character, Phoenix Cyclops, slated for a Fall 2026 release. Both Arc System Works and Marvel Games have expressed satisfaction with the game's progress and future prospects.
Producer Takeshi Tamanaka of Arc System Works offered a direct apology to PC players for the launch problems. "First of all, I would just like to apologize to all of the players," Tamanaka stated. "The PC version launched with so many issues, and I realized that it caused a lot of inconvenience and concern to so many players." He explained that the performance problems were not attributable to a single cause but rather a confluence of factors related to the diverse range of PC hardware and environments. Tamanaka noted that subsequent patches have improved the experience, based on player feedback, and encouraged those initially deterred by the launch issues to revisit the game.
Despite the technical difficulties on PC, game director Kazutoshi Sekine observed that many players had already invested significant time, with some exceeding 100 hours in the first week. "As far as the actual content of the game itself, I've seen a lot of players really enjoying it," Sekine commented, indicating that the core gameplay resonated well with the community.
Maintaining Game Balance
Sekine elaborated on the team's goal to create a "new and chaotic tag fighter experience." He acknowledged the ongoing challenge of maintaining balance as the game evolves. "The more you play the game, the more depth you discover, more things that these characters and these combinations can achieve," Sekine said. The development team employs internal playtesting and discussions to assess the impact of new mechanics and character abilities, mirroring the debates seen within the player base. "We have the same kind of discussions that we see players having once the game is out, and we're trying to constantly find like how far we can go, how powerful we can make this, and the right level of balance," he added.
When designing characters, Sekine emphasized the importance of expressing their unique identities. The team also draws heavily on their experience from previous projects. Deadpool's inclusion, for instance, was designed to be memorable, incorporating fourth-wall breaks and references from fighting game history. This creative direction received approval from both PlayStation and Marvel.
A Collaborative Partnership
Marvel Games senior product development manager Michael Francisco expressed enthusiasm for the player engagement seen so far. "We've seen so much great engagement from the fans and the community, we've already seen the players push the game to its absolute limit, and we say hey, bring it on," Francisco remarked. He highlighted the emergent strategies and competitive scene developing within the community, such as combo videos and tournaments, as heartwarming indicators of the game's success.
Francisco also finds the community's debates around character tier lists particularly interesting, as it suggests a high level of game depth. "These types of debates show that the game has a lot of depth and is still relatively unsolved, and it's really cool that even the top players have something to chew on," he stated.
The Future of Marvel Tokon
The roster expansion is a key focus for the game's future. Francisco outlined Marvel's criteria for selecting new characters: they must be "iconic," offer fresh gameplay possibilities, and have the potential to introduce new fans to the Marvel universe. Characters like Magneto, with his unique stage-throwing mechanic, and potential future additions such as Danger or The Champion, exemplify this approach.
Arc System Works remains committed to supporting Marvel Tokon. "If any new in-game issues come up, that's something that we would continue to try to address as promptly as possible," Tamanaka assured. "This game is something that we want to continue to support and update to make it something that will really stay with the community, and be something that the players can enjoy long into the future."
