Sales estimates from Alinea Analytics indicate that Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls has achieved nearly 500,000 sales in its first week of release. The analysis, shared by Alinea's head of market analysis Rhys Elliott, places sales figures at approximately 485,000 copies combined for PlayStation 5 and PC.
The PlayStation 5 version accounted for the majority of these sales, representing 74 percent, with the PC version on Steam making up the remaining 26 percent. Elliott noted the conventional popularity of fighting games on consoles compared to PC. He also suggested that performance issues impacting the PC version at launch may have hindered broader word-of-mouth promotion, potentially limiting sales to closer to one million units had these problems not occurred.
Regionally, North America represents the largest player base for Marvel Tōkon, accounting for 75 percent of players. The notes also highlight interesting overlaps in player behavior, with a significant percentage of PS5 Marvel Tōkon players having also engaged with titles like Dragon Ball FighterZ (52 percent), Street Fighter 5 (49 percent), and Mortal Kombat 1 (41 percent), suggesting a strong turnout from the dedicated fighting game community.
Fan engagement with the Marvel franchise also appears to be a significant factor. Among PS5 players, 60 percent have played Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, 57 percent have played Marvel's Spider-Man 2, and 53 percent have also tried Marvel Rivals, underscoring the brand's appeal.
Comparing these initial figures to other successful fighting games, Marvel Tōkon's pace is similar to that of Dragon Ball FighterZ, which was released in 2018 by Arc System Works and went on to sell over 10 million copies by 2023. In contrast, the free-to-play game 2XKO has reportedly surpassed one million lifetime players since its January release. Meanwhile, NetherRealm Studios' superhero brawler Injustice 2 has sold over 9 million copies worldwide since its 2017 launch.
A recent patch has reportedly addressed several of the performance issues that affected the PC version of Marvel Tōkon. These improvements may help the game maintain its momentum and potentially boost its word-of-mouth engagement in the coming months.
