Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls has achieved an estimated 485,000 unit sales within its first week of release for PC and PlayStation 5, according to data from Alinea Analytics. The PlayStation 5 has emerged as the dominant platform, accounting for 74% of all sales, while Steam captured the remaining 26%. This disparity is likely influenced by technical difficulties that plagued the PC version at launch. Arc System Works has since released a patch to address these performance issues.
The game has generated an estimated $33 million in revenue. Notably, physical sales on PS5 represented a surprisingly low 15.1% of the total units sold on that platform. Analysis of player data indicates that Marvel Tokon has successfully attracted a dedicated fighting game audience, with a significant percentage of players having prior experience in titles such as Dragon Ball FighterZ (52%), Street Fighter 6 (39%), and Mortal Kombat 1 (41%).
Marvel's established brand recognition has also been a considerable factor in driving sales. Alinea Analytics noted a strong overlap between Marvel Tokon players and those who have previously engaged with Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man titles and NetEase's Marvel Rivals. This crossover appeal is further amplified by concurrent interest in Marvel properties, such as the cinematic success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
While nearing 500,000 sales is a positive start, Rhys Elliott, head of market analysis at Alinea Analytics, emphasized that fighting games remain a niche genre. However, these games often benefit from passionate fanbases that contribute to long-term sales longevity. For comparison, Street Fighter 6, a leading title in the genre, has surpassed 7 million lifetime sales since its 2023 launch. Marvel Tokon aims to establish a similar enduring presence, with developers targeting a decade-long spotlight for the 4v4 tag-based fighter.
GameSpot's review highlighted the game's innovative approach, stating, "Rather than lean on old tropes, Arc System Works elected to put its own spin on the idea, and what they've cooked up sets a new bar for future tag fighters. Once the technical issues for PC are ironed out, there's a bright future ahead. With Marvel Tokon, Arc System Works has created the next foundational title for modern fighting games."
