Tokyo-based developer and publisher Marvelous has unveiled Eternal Anima, a new role-playing game distinguished by a visual style reminiscent of Square Enix's HD-2D aesthetic. The game is slated for release on Nintendo Switch 2 on March 4, 2027.
The narrative of Eternal Anima unfolds in a world largely submerged by ocean, where humanity has reportedly abandoned its past aspirations and wisdom. Within the sole remaining city, known as Urbis Ale, a strict rule dictates that no one should strive for a better tomorrow. The protagonist, Wade, appears to defy this decree by utilizing a mysterious power that allows him to relive past memories and explore beyond the city's confines. This pursuit of knowledge leads to him being branded a heretic, though it does not deter his quest.
Details revealed in the game's trailer suggest a combat system that incorporates elements of foresight. The narrator explains that by inheriting the world's memories, players can acquire the abilities of past heroes. The combat is turn-based, allowing players to perceive and predict enemy actions and subsequently disrupt their intended moves. The adventure is designed to extend into the past as players seek to uncover the world's hidden truths, posing the question of whether the past can be saved to liberate the present.
