Mass Effect 3's popular multiplayer component has been painstakingly recreated and ported into the Mass Effect Legendary Edition by a team of dedicated modders. The project, led by the ME3Tweaks team, is set to launch on November 7, coinciding with the annual N7 Day celebration.

While the Mass Effect Legendary Edition, released in 2021, included all single-player content and DLC for the original trilogy, it notably omitted Mass Effect 3's multiplayer. This omission left a significant portion of the fanbase without access to a mode many had spent hundreds of hours playing.

Mgamerz, the lead of ME3Tweaks, detailed the extensive effort involved in the port. "The scope of work is just huge," he explained. The process involved not just porting assets but also re-baking lighting in Unreal Engine 4 and upgrading character meshes, which were sometimes of lower quality in the original release. "We took a lot of extra steps," Mgamerz stated, emphasizing that it is not a simple one-to-one port.

The modding effort began with smaller projects, like porting the Pinnacle Station DLC for Mass Effect 2. The idea to bring back the multiplayer emerged near the end of 2023, with the team spending the last three years on development. Early prototypes confirmed the multiplayer's functionality within the first month, but the subsequent years were dedicated to refining audio, shaders, textures, and ensuring the game looked and performed well with the Legendary Edition's improvements.

While the original Mass Effect 3 multiplayer servers were still operational at the time of the interview, Mgamerz expressed uncertainty about their longevity, particularly following EA's recent shutdown of BioWare. The mod's release on N7 Day was a long-standing goal, unaffected by the studio's closure, though the increased attention surrounding Mass Effect currently is expected to boost the mod's visibility.

The mod requires players to own Mass Effect Legendary Edition and functions as a standalone installation, separate from existing Mass Effect 3 mods, to prevent immediate compatibility issues. ME3Tweaks aims for long-term support, with plans for additional mods like a Mass Effect 1 and 3 randomizer, and enhancements to gameplay experiences, including dynamic enemy encounters.

Mgamerz also touched upon the evolving landscape of game modding, particularly the rise of AI tools. While acknowledging the power of AI, he expressed concerns about the potential for low-quality, unsupportable mods flooding the scene, contrasting it with the meticulous, challenging work of traditional modding. The team has utilized AI for some decompilation tasks but emphasized that the majority of their work predates widely available AI solutions. The mod is available on Nexus Mods.
