In the wake of EA's closure of BioWare and the subsequent cancellation of the fifth Mass Effect game, composer Austin Wintory has shared early musical drafts he created for the project. Wintory, known for his work on titles such as Journey, The Banner Saga, and Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, expressed that Mass Effect had always been a "white whale" for him and that he had been in discussions with BioWare and EA for several years about contributing to the new installment.
As part of these discussions, Wintory composed approximately 20 minutes of music, presented as eight tracks in a YouTube video, to explore potential new directions for the franchise. He noted that he wrote this music in 2025 without knowledge of the game's specific story, describing it as "narratively speculative." His conceptual soundtrack aimed to pay homage to the original Mass Effect score by Jack Wall and Sam Hulick, while incorporating analog synthesizers and a more complex orchestral integration, drawing parallels to the hybrid nature of The Matrix's score.
Wintory stated that the news of BioWare's closure and the cancellation of Mass Effect 5 was a significant loss, especially given the difficulty of seeing friends lose their jobs and a beloved franchise seemingly vanish. He expressed gratitude to BioWare and EA's music department for the opportunity to contribute, even in a conceptual capacity.
This release follows the recent leak of an unreleased cinematic trailer for the canceled Mass Effect game, which appeared online shortly after BioWare's shutdown was announced.
