Award-winning composer Austin Wintory, known for his work on titles such as Journey and Hades II, has revealed a significant portion of music he composed for a potential Mass Effect 5. Wintory expressed that Mass Effect was his "ultimate white whale" and a "dream project," having been in discussions with BioWare and EA for several years regarding the franchise.
As part of these exploratory talks, Wintory created approximately 20 minutes of music to envision the future direction of the series. He described this work as a "giant love letter to the franchise" and a "narratively speculative" piece, created in 2025 without knowledge of BioWare's specific plans at the time. Wintory aimed for his score to be an homage to the original Mass Effect's soundtrack by Jack Wall and Sam Hulick, incorporating more complex orchestral arrangements and leaning into analog synthesizers, similar to the hybrid approach found in The Matrix.
Wintory shared the music via a YouTube upload, accompanying it with text that detailed his personal connection to the Mass Effect trilogy, which he considers his most cherished gaming experience. He stated that while nothing was finalized, both EA and BioWare seemed eager to involve him in the project. Despite the eventual cancellation of the Mass Effect: Universe project, Wintory conveyed his gratitude to BioWare and EA for the opportunity to even explore possibilities within the beloved science fiction universe.
