Mass Effect 5 Team Was "Incredibly Good" Before BioWare Shutdown, Says Art Director

The development team for the canceled Mass Effect 5, codenamed "Mass Effect: Universe," was a highly effective and cohesive unit before BioWare was shuttered, according to franchise art director Nicolas Sparth Bouvier.

Bouvier, who previously contributed to series like Halo and Assassin's Creed, joined the Mass Effect team as art director in April and spent six months working on the project. He described the experience on Twitter as a privilege, stating that the team was "tightly knit" and "good at working together."

"Knowing that this work will never see the light of day is truly heartbreaking," Bouvier wrote. "We were good at this. We really were. I’m thinking about the team, the talent, what we could have achieved. In nearly 30 years in this industry, I’ve rarely seen a group so tightly knit, so experienced, and so good at working together."

Reports from other developers who worked on the game corroborate Bouvier's account. The small team that remained at BioWare had reportedly developed strong collaborative practices, and their ambitious ideas for "Universe" were beginning to coalesce. Developers had discussed plans for the game to acknowledge player choices from the original trilogy and to move away from the open-zone structure that characterized Mass Effect: Andromeda.

Narrative team members also reported positive collaborations. Writer Derek Künsken described working with Mass Effect Andromeda: Annihilation author Catherynne M. Valente as "the most energizing, in-the-zone collaboration" he had experienced.

These accounts stand in contrast to the troubled development cycles of BioWare's more recent titles, including Mass Effect: Andromeda, Anthem, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which were each marked by significant challenges and corporate interference. The closure of BioWare and cancellation of Mass Effect 5 leaves a void, with fans now channeling their energy into initiatives to "save" the Mass Effect franchise, though these efforts have faced internal complications regarding the best path forward for the IP.
