Graffiti bearing the message "Save Mass Effect" has reportedly appeared outside Electronic Arts' offices in Madrid, Spain. This incident follows EA's recent announcement of the indefinite hold placed on the Mass Effect franchise and the shuttering of its development studio, BioWare.
The graffiti was shared on Reddit by user Ok_Link9625, who posted images of the markings on the building's entrance and facade. The messages align with the #SaveMassEffect social media campaign, which gained traction after the franchise's future was cast into doubt.
This direct action by fans comes as the #SaveMassEffect movement has seen significant momentum. A petition created to advocate for the series' continuation has garnered over 290,000 signatures. In addition to online efforts, fans organized a billboard campaign in New York's Times Square and have plans for further displays, including one outside The Game Awards.
The use of graffiti as a form of protest has divided the fan community. While some support any action that keeps pressure on EA to reconsider its decision and support the creators, others question the effectiveness of vandalism in achieving these goals. Mass Effect series composer Sam Hulick acknowledged the rapid escalation of fan efforts, stating, "The fans are serious as a heart attack!"
Despite these fan actions, EA's plans for the Mass Effect franchise remain uncertain. Reports suggest that the publisher has shifted focus to prioritizing Star Wars Battlefront 3 over the development of Mass Effect 5. Details that have emerged about the canceled Mass Effect 5 project indicated that BioWare intended to create a narrative that would acknowledge all player choices from previous games in the series.
