Further information has surfaced regarding BioWare's canceled Mass Effect title, reportedly codenamed 'Mass Effect: Universe,' revealing an ambitious design that aimed to incorporate every player choice from the original Commander Shepard trilogy. These details come from former technical director Romain Toutain.
According to Toutain, the game's narrative was built around decisions made in the first three Mass Effect installments. "All the choices made in the first Mass Effect games were taken into account," Toutain explained. "One of the reasons why it was called 'Mass Effect: Universe' is that you had so many choices. That you could plug your saves together to create parallel universes, to keep it simple. It's not exactly how it worked. You had different timelines, basically."
The Mass Effect series is known for its player-driven narrative, particularly within the Commander Shepard saga. Players could import their save files to carry over significant decisions, affecting character relationships, plot outcomes, and the fate of entire species. 'Mass Effect: Universe' was intended to build upon this legacy, offering players the chance to explore varied narrative paths. Toutain compared the system's potential for generating alternate timelines to that of Spike Chunsoft's 2016 title, Zero Time Dilemma.
Toutain elaborated on the technical complexity, stating that the game aimed to make "everything stateful." This would have allowed players to pause the game and query a system designed to solve logical equations, determining the validity of narrative choices and identifying the conditions required for them to be true. This system, he noted, worked in practice and was a source of excitement for the development team.
EA announced the shutdown of BioWare's studio and the cancellation of the game last week. The future of the Mass Effect franchise remains uncertain, though a Prime Video series is reportedly still in development. In the wake of the cancellation, a fan-led #SaveMassEffect movement has gained significant traction, with a petition to save the game amassing over 185,000 signatures.
Additional leaks following the studio's demise have offered further glimpses into the canceled project. These include details about a character referred to as 'Billy,' the Reaper-like hand shown in leaked footage, and gameplay concepts that promised "Hitman-style freedom" in mission design. A full trailer for what would have been Mass Effect 5 has also reportedly leaked online.
