The Mass Effect television series is still in development at Amazon MGM Studios, IGN can exclusively reveal. This news comes despite the recent closure of BioWare Austin, which effectively ended the development of the next Mass Effect game.
Sources at Prime Video confirm that the creative team attached to the Mass Effect TV project remains onboard. As of August 2025, Doug Jung was serving as showrunner, with Daniel Casey writing the series. The production team also included former Marvel Studios boss Ari Arad and BioWare's Mass Effect boss Mike Gamble.
The Mass Effect TV series has been officially in development at Prime Video since 2024, though it was first rumored in 2021. The project emerged after years of failed attempts to adapt the science fiction game franchise into a feature film. Previous reports indicated that the show will not retread Commander Shepard's story but will instead be set after the events of the original game trilogy.
Showrunner Daniel Casey publicly refuted claims in April that Prime Video was seeking rewrites to make the series more accessible to a non-gaming audience. At one point, production for the series was eyed for a Q4 2026 start, but a release date has not yet been announced. Following the success of the Fallout television adaptation, Prime Video appears to be aiming to replicate that success with its Mass Effect series.
