Mass Effect TV Show Continues Development Amidst BioWare Closure and Game Cancellation

The highly anticipated Mass Effect television series remains in development for Prime Video, even as reports indicate Electronic Arts has closed the BioWare studio and canceled the next entry in the flagship RPG series. A source speaking to IGN confirmed that key creative personnel attached to the television project are still under contract. This includes Mike Gamble, a project director and executive producer at BioWare, who was reportedly among those affected by layoffs.

The Mass Effect show was first announced in 2021, and previous updates from 2025 indicated that Doug Jung, known for his work on Star Trek Beyond, was serving as showrunner. Daniel Casey, a writer for Fast & Furious 9, was also reported to be involved as a writer.

Prime Video has shown a significant commitment to video game adaptations, also developing series based on Tomb Raider and God of War. The platform is home to the successful Fallout television series, which has been renewed for a third season.

The reported closure of BioWare and cancellation of the Mass Effect game follow EA's transition to a private company. The acquisition involved an investor consortium including Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, Affinity Partners, and Silver Lake. In the wake of the sale, EA stated its intention to achieve $700 million in cost savings to address significant debt incurred from the transaction, leading to widespread concerns about layoffs and studio closures across the company. In addition to BioWare, EA has announced broader workforce reductions and the halting of development on other projects, such as a new installment in The Sims franchise.
