The canceled Mass Effect game, tentatively titled Mass Effect Universe, was designed with a sprawling multiverse system that would have branched into countless parallel timelines based on player choices, according to former BioWare technical director Romain Toutain. Toutain shared these details during a recent Twitch stream where he analyzed a leaked trailer for the project.
Toutain explained that each save file would have represented its own universe, with every player decision creating a separate timeline. This approach would have allowed for players to make choices that contradicted previous ones, creating a dynamic and highly personalized narrative experience. The system was compared to that of Zero Time Dilemma, where player decisions spawn alternative realities. A proprietary technology was developed to map the connections between decisions and key plot points, ensuring that even divergent paths felt narratively cohesive. The ultimate goal, Toutain stated, was to offer players "absolute autonomy."
Details about the game's lore were also touched upon, with Toutain confirming that a hairy, tentacled alien glimpsed in the trailer represented a new species. He was unable to elaborate on specific plot elements or character details due to ongoing confidentiality agreements, mirroring the situation for writers who previously worked on the project.
Despite ongoing efforts by fans and some former employees to revive the game, Toutain expressed pessimism regarding its future. He cited EA's tendency to abandon franchises rather than sell them, suggesting that Mass Effect may remain dormant.
