Mass Effect: Universe Was Pitched as 'John Wick in Space,' New Details Emerge

Details have surfaced regarding a canceled Mass Effect project, codenamed Mass Effect Universe, which reportedly envisioned a radical departure for the series, blending espionage and intense combat akin to John Wick. The game was conceptualized to move away from the large-scale galactic warfare of the original trilogy, focusing instead on covert operations and personal encounters.

According to gaming content creator Dantics, who participated in a BioWare community feedback group called the "Mass Effect Council," the game would be set over 600 years after the Reaper War. Players would assume the role of a customizable N7 agent, equipped with a limited arsenal designed to evoke a "cross between John Wick and James Bond." The core gameplay loop would involve confronting a shadowy organization operating amidst a galactic cold war, emphasizing cunning and tactical aggression.

Following the Reaper War, the galaxy would have seen significant advancements. The Mass Relays, destroyed at the end of the conflict, were rebuilt, facilitating rapid technological progress. New alliances would have formed, with council races establishing their own faction, while humanity allied with species like Krogans and Batarians. The Geth, a synthetic intelligence, would emerge as a third power, developing superstructure relays that could connect the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies.

Gameplay mechanics reportedly included experimental technology implanted in the N7 agent, enabling environmental hacking and manipulation reminiscent of Cyberpunk 2077. Missions were designed with a handcrafted feel but offered "Hitman-style freedom" in their execution. The game would also feature squadmates, with the potential for inter-squadmate conflict, and a more mature approach to romance, as hinted at in a leaked trailer. Liara T'Soni, a familiar character, was slated to return as a powerful Asari Matriarch.

While Mass Effect Universe has been shelved, BioWare's future remains uncertain following reports of EA potentially shutting down the studio. However, a Mass Effect TV series is reportedly still in development. The timing of these revelations coincides with the release of a new trailer for Exodus, a spiritual successor to Mass Effect developed by Archetype Entertainment.
