Mass Effect Voice Actors Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer Urge Fans to Save the Franchise

The recent news of BioWare's shutdown and the subsequent cancellation of the new Mass Effect game, formerly known as Mass Effect: Universe, has galvanized the franchise's fanbase. In an effort to preserve the future of the beloved sci-fi role-playing series, a significant fan movement has emerged, now joined by Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer, the original voice actors for Commander Shepard.

A fan petition circulating on social media has rapidly gained momentum, securing over 130,000 signatures in just three days. Jennifer Hale, the voice of female Commander Shepard, publicly expressed her hope for the franchise's revival on X. "I like to think about a world where the fans come together to create a Kickstarter and then a couple of investors join them, and then a really cool game company joins them, and a collective is formed to bring Mass Effect back to life," Hale stated. "For the community, for the creative, for all of us, and it's amazing."

Mark Meer, who lends his voice to the male Commander Shepard, echoed Hale's sentiment by quoting her post. "I just saw my friend Jennifer Hale post about an idea, and I think it's a pretty good one: save Mass Effect. Hold the line. I should go, and you should go sign that petition," Meer remarked, referencing a popular quote from the series.

The Electronic Arts buyout by Saudi Arabia's PIF and private equity had previously raised concerns among players regarding the future of its game franchises. These concerns were seemingly realized when BioWare was shut down, and its most anticipated project, the new Mass Effect game, was canceled. The Mass Effect trilogy is renowned for its narrative depth, memorable characters, and intricate lore, making the cancellation of its successor particularly disheartening for its dedicated player base.

Despite the considerable backlash and the emergence of a passionate fan campaign, the article notes that it remains unlikely Electronic Arts will reverse its decision based on a fan petition alone. Nonetheless, the community's unified effort to fight for a franchise they value is highlighted as a testament to the series' enduring legacy.
