The next generation of Pokémon games, tentatively titled Winds and Waves, is still over a year away, but the rumor mill is already churning with significant leaks and speculation. Reports suggest an unprecedented number of new Pokémon, a revamped battle mechanic, and new traversal methods for the upcoming titles.
One of the most significant rumors circulating claims that Winds and Waves will introduce over 300 new Pokémon and regional forms. If accurate, this would dwarf the 151 Pokémon introduced in the original Red and Blue games and represent the largest single-generation addition to the Pokédex. This massive count may include numerous forms of a mysterious new "Seed" Pokémon, which is theorized to transform into multiple variations based on in-game events.
New Battle Gimmick and Starter Typings
The games are also rumored to feature a new battle gimmick involving weather-based transformations. These could bear similarities to Mega Evolutions from X and Y or the Gigantamax forms seen in Sword and Shield. Leaked development footage has shown a distorted Pikachu model, though it remains unclear if this visual represents an early concept or the final iteration of the mechanic.
The final typings for the starter Pokémon have also been a subject of leaks. Browt, the Grass-type starter, is rumored to evolve into a Grass/Ground type. Pombom, the Fire starter, is expected to become Fire/Fairy. Gecqua, the Water starter, is reportedly set to be Water/Psychic.
Several existing Pokémon are also rumored to receive new regional forms in Winds and Waves. Names such as Shellos, Salandit, Drowzee, Psyduck, Nincada, Houndour, Zweilous, Onix, and Clamperl have been mentioned in connection with potential new variants. One rumored variant, an Ice/Psychic Psyduck, has reportedly been disputed by some leakers.
Open World Traversal and Voice Acting
With an open world confirmed for Winds and Waves, players will reportedly navigate the environment using a Rotom scooter. This device is said to be capable of hovering and can tether to Pokémon to act as a sled in certain situations, a departure from the rideable Pokémon seen in Scarlet and Violet. The player characters were observed carrying board-like devices in early reveals, lending credence to this leak.
Furthermore, there are whispers that Winds and Waves may incorporate some level of voice acting into a mainline Pokémon game. While previous titles have featured character grunts and yells, full spoken dialogue has been absent. A prominent leaker has claimed that voice recording sessions have taken place, suggesting a potential shift in the series' presentation.
It is important to note that much of this information stems from unofficial leaks and early build details, which may not accurately reflect the final game. Information from the Teraleak, for instance, is several years old. Players will have to wait until Winds and Waves launches in 2027 to see which of these rumors prove true.
