A new PC mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, named Aurbis, aims to transform the single-player role-playing game into a persistent online world akin to an MMO. This ambitious project introduces a host of multiplayer and MMO-like systems, focusing on creating lasting consequences from player actions.
Aurbis is designed with roleplaying in mind, though its creators emphasize that it is not mandatory. Players can engage in cooperative dungeon runs, PvP combat, or focus on other aspects of the game. The mod overhauls character creation, allowing avatars to develop over time rather than gain immediate power, and offers options for starting with vampirism or lycanthropy for roleplaying purposes. A player's chosen Birthsign influences skill development efficiency.
The mod implements a player-driven economy supported by crafting professions, featuring bank accounts, property ownership, and player-created quests. Combat is designed to be more dangerous, rewarding preparation, specialized equipment, and teamwork.
New multiplayer-specific systems include the formation of "Cohorts," designed for social gameplay, ranging from parties and guilds to faction alignments. This integrates familiar Skyrim content with custom multiplayer mechanics.
Aurbis also incorporates more nuanced survival systems, detailed horse management, and MMO-style death penalties. Notably, it features a language and literacy system, where players won't automatically understand all conversations or know every location, adding a layer of roleplaying depth.
This mod is currently in early access. To participate, players need a legitimate copy of Skyrim downgraded to version 1.6.1170. Access to the beta can be gained via a session key found on the Aurbis ModDB page. The mod utilizes a custom launcher to manage all necessary files.
