Marcus Lehto, often referred to as the "father of Master Chief," has voiced his dissatisfaction with the visual design of the Halo rings in the upcoming remake, Halo: Campaign Evolved. Lehto, who served as art director on the original Halo: Combat Evolved and its initial sequels, has expressed that the new rendition of the iconic structures appears too modern and lacks the ancient, mysterious quality he envisioned.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a reimagining of the 2001 original, built with Unreal Engine 5. While trailers suggest a faithful recreation, Lehto perceives a significant departure in the aesthetic of the Forerunner technology. "While Forerunner tech was metal (not stone) it was also ancient, vast, alive, and a tomb to the horrors that lurked within," Lehto stated on X, accompanying his comments with a visual comparison of the rings. He elaborated that the original rings had endured millennia of conflict, yet the new design presents them as if they were constructed only a few years prior.

Lehto specifically criticized the main menu ring, calling it "the most offensive thing we see every time we boot up the game." He believes it should evoke a sense of immense scale, darkness, mystery, and wonder, but instead appears as a "shiny new toy" that is out of scale and devoid of intrigue. The artist also pointed out that the design neglects to visually represent the wear and tear such colossal structures would sustain from extensive warfare, Flood outbreaks, and constant repairs over vast periods.

Despite these specific critiques of the ring design, Lehto has expressed general approval for other aspects of Halo: Campaign Evolved. He previously commented that the game "looks and feels genuine" and praised its visual presentation, suggesting it was "gorgeous in a way I wish we could have built it originally back in 2001." He specifically highlighted the upgraded movement, cinematics, and brilliant lighting as enjoyable elements. However, the appearance of the Halo rings remains a notable point of contention for the original creator, with his reservations about their new aesthetic taking precedence over his overall enjoyment of the remake's other advancements.
