The 'New Beginnings' update for Masters of Albion, the final game from legendary designer Peter Molyneux, has launched today, bringing significant overhauls to many of the game's early access systems. This update aims to refine the experience and capture the "god game magic" that Molyneux is known for.
Engine Performance and Visuals
Engine performance has reportedly doubled with the update. "You know, my hope was to get to 30 frames a second for everybody for the recommended system [specs]," Peter Molyneux stated. "But we now sit at between 60 and 80 frames [on average]. That's a huge jump. When we release, that will be felt by everyone."
Overhauled Nighttime Gameplay
Nighttime gameplay has been significantly reworked. Previously, nighttime attacks on settlements were a challenge to simply survive. Now, successfully defending settlements earns players "buffs" that increase their power as a god. Approximately 200 different buffs are available to unlock, providing a more strategic and engaging experience.
New Card-Based Arcadium
The game's Arcadium, previously a "spider's web of stuff" tech tree, has been completely reauthored into a card-based system. Players use in-game currency to unlock cards, such as a lightning bolt card, which can then be enhanced by nighttime gameplay, linking day and night mechanics.
Narrative-Driven Orders and Reworked Design Table
Product orders, a core gameplay loop, have been made narrative-driven to increase emotional engagement. The design table has been reworked to support this, with "tips" added to orders that encourage players to solve puzzles for additional rewards, making the process less tedious.
Environmental Interactions and World Elements
The Orkenstone now warps the landscape, spreading corruption that wilts crops and trees each night, though a decorative item exists to push it back. The "god hand" has also been upgraded with more interactive elements. Players can now pick up wheat, move trees, and interact with characters in various ways, such as placing them on a bench to chat or engaging with a "dunking stall."
The game's opening has also been enhanced, described as a "remaster" to be bigger and better. Mysterious new colossal structures have appeared in the world, hinting at future content.
A Renewed Hope for God Game Fans
Before the 'New Beginnings' update, the game was described as "lightweight" with systems that "soon ran dry." The extensive changes implemented are seen as directly addressing the core issues of depth and system interaction, potentially transforming Masters of Albion into a recommendation for god game enthusiasts and fans of the genre.
The engine optimization is a significant improvement, addressing previous performance issues. The introduction of colossal structures on the horizon also suggests the potential for future expansions, possibly including Black & White-style giant avatars. If the developers continue to act on community feedback, Masters of Albion may fulfill its promise as a definitive god game.
