Matthew Patrick, the internet personality widely known as MatPat, has entered into a multi-project development deal with Blumhouse Productions, the prolific horror studio behind franchises like "The Purge" and "Get Out." The collaboration aims to adapt popular indie horror games, particularly those with mascot-centric themes, into feature films. The first project under this new banner will be a cinematic adaptation of DreadXP's tape-based puzzle horror game, "Amanda the Adventurer."
Patrick, who has spent 15 years dissecting and theorizing about video game lore on his "Game Theory" YouTube channel, has been instrumental in the rise of games like "Five Nights at Freddy's." His analysis and speculation are credited with significantly boosting the game's popularity, turning it into a cultural phenomenon that eventually led to a successful film adaptation in 2023, which was also produced by Blumhouse. Patrick himself made a cameo appearance in the "Five Nights at Freddy's" movie and its 2025 sequel.
"The idea is that I’m taking some of my favorite indie games and horror channels from the online interwebz and I am partnering with Blumhouse to bring them to the big screen," Patrick stated in an announcement. He emphasized the goal of giving these online creators and their games a larger platform. "We are giving them the spotlight that they deserve, the megaphone they need, because they’re incredible."
The "Amanda the Adventurer" movie will be the inaugural release from this partnership. The game itself centers on uncovering the sinister secrets hidden within a seemingly innocent children's television program presented on VHS tapes. This choice aligns with Patrick's proven success in elevating horror games with similar themes, such as "Poppy's Playtime," "Baldi," and "Bendy," which often feature unsettling twists on children's toys and entertainment.
During the New York Comic Con announcement, Patrick addressed which games would not be part of the new slate, confirming that "Slender Man" was not in consideration, stating, "They already tried Slender Man. That ship has sailed my friend."
