Matt Damon has become a recurring figure in a particular cinematic niche: the stranded protagonist. He is well aware of the internet memes that highlight this pattern in his filmography, finding them amusing and even having them shared by his family. "I've seen those memes," Damon told Polygon. "They're funny. Friends send them to me. My kids sent one to me. How much money's been spent trying to bring me back from places?"

This theme is evident in films such as The Martian, where his character Mark Watney is marooned on Mars, and Interstellar, which places him in deep space. Even Saving Private Ryan involves a mission to rescue his character from behind enemy lines. His latest role in The Odyssey further emphasizes this, centering on Odysseus' arduous journey home after the Trojan War, marked by multiple periods of being stranded.

Damon expressed his willingness to continue exploring such roles, stating, "I'm gonna ride this pony until it runs out."

Collectively, Hollywood has invested approximately $600 million in films featuring Damon as a stranded character, with these movies generating nearly $2 billion at the box office. These figures do not yet include The Odyssey. One fan's calculation suggested that rescuing Damon's character in Interstellar alone would have cost $900 billion in-universe, a point Damon attributed to the extreme distance involved. "Because in Interstellar, I'm on, like, another planet," he noted. "That is a lot of jet fuel."

His co-star in both Interstellar and The Odyssey, Anne Hathaway, humorously added, "Yeah, we arrived for you."

Damon also frequently portrays highly intelligent characters, a trend that began with his breakout role as Will Hunting. In The Odyssey, he plays Odysseus, a hero renowned for his intellect and cunning. Hathaway quipped about her co-star's frequent roles, saying, "He's played really smart, stranded men."

Looking ahead, Damon is open to future roles that might involve similar predicaments. "I'm up for it wherever it is," he said. "It's worked out really well." The Odyssey is set to release on July 17.
