Matt Damon's digital presence has expanded to Fortnite, with a skin based on his portrayal of Odysseus in Christopher Nolan's film "The Odyssey" now available. However, this marks his first video game appearance; a prior opportunity to feature as his iconic Jason Bourne character in "The Bourne Conspiracy" was ultimately abandoned.
Details emerged from a 2021 interview where Damon revealed he was offered a significant sum to reprise his role as Jason Bourne for the 2008 game "The Bourne Conspiracy." His hesitation stemmed from a desire for the game to be more than a standard first-person shooter, with Damon envisioning a more cerebral experience akin to the puzzle-adventure game "Myst," which notably lacks combat or action sequences. The development team at High Moon Studios apparently did not share this vision, proceeding with development without Damon's involvement. Fellow "Bourne" franchise actors Chris Cooper and Franka Potente were also considered, with Potente eventually reprising her role as Marie Helena Kreutz.
"The Bourne Conspiracy" ultimately released as a hybrid action title, blending elements of brawling, stealth, shooting, and driving. Critics noted its ambition but described it as a jack of all trades, master of none. The Bourne film series has seen little activity since the 2016 release of "Jason Bourne," a sequel that received a lukewarm reception. Many fans consider the original trilogy, concluding with "The Bourne Ultimatum," to be the definitive arc of the character.
