Matthew Lillard, known for his roles in Scream and Daredevil: Born Again, has offered a cryptic hint about his undisclosed character in James Gunn's upcoming DC Universe film, Man of Tomorrow. The actor suggested that his role in the Superman sequel might be an original creation, steering away from direct comic book adaptations.
In an interview with The Direct, Lillard described his involvement as "a very James Gunn moment" and advised fans not to "worry too much about finding [his character] in the comics." This statement fuels speculation that Gunn may have developed a new character specifically for Lillard, or delved into deep cuts of DC Comics lore. This comes after director James Gunn debunked a popular fan theory that Lillard would portray Barry Allen, a role previously filled by Ezra Miller.
While the prospect of an original character could be exciting, it might also mean Lillard's presence in the DCU could be less prominent than fans had hoped.
Production Update on Man of Tomorrow
Man of Tomorrow, the sequel to 2025's Superman, is scheduled for release on July 9, 2027. Production appears to be progressing well, with Gunn announcing the completion of the film's assembly cut in early October. The film will see David Corenswet returning as Clark Kent/Superman, alongside Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The duo will unite to face the formidable villain Brainiac, who will be portrayed by Lars Eidinger.
The expanded cast includes established DCU actors such as Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., María Gabriela de Faría as the Engineer, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Milly Alcock as Supergirl, and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. Adria Arjona, known for her roles in Hitman and Andor, is also set to appear in Man of Tomorrow, though her character remains a mystery.
