Matthew Lillard Teases His Role in James Gunn's 'Superman 2: Man of Tomorrow'

Matthew Lillard, known for his role in "Daredevil: Born Again," is set to join the wider James Gunn DC Universe in "Superman 2: Man of Tomorrow." However, Lillard's character may not be one that comic book fans immediately recognize.

The upcoming film will see David Corenswet take on the mantle of Superman, forming an alliance with Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor. The primary antagonist will be Brainiac, a more intellectually formidable foe than Luthor. Returning cast members include Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen. The film is also expected to feature characters from the broader DCU, such as Blue Beetle and the Justice Gang.

During a promotional tour for Prime Video's "Carrie" adaptation, Lillard addressed speculation about his role. He confirmed that his character is "a very James Gunn moment," indicating that he will likely portray an original character created specifically for the DCU, rather than an established comic figure. This aligns with Gunn's history of introducing new characters to the universe, like Amanda Waller's daughter and Mister Handsome.

"Superman 2: Man of Tomorrow" is slated for a July 9, 2027, theatrical release. James Gunn has recently been active in dispelling rumors surrounding DC Studios casting, including denying reports of Milly Alcock's departure from the role of Supergirl.
