Matthew McConaughey has detailed his reasons for not accepting the role of Joel Miller in HBO's acclaimed adaptation of The Last of Us. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, McConaughey confirmed that series co-creator Craig Mazin had approached him about the part early in its development. However, the actor was not able to take on the project at that time, as his focus was directed towards writing and he expressed reservations about committing to a television series requiring a multi-year dedication.

McConaughey noted that his involvement in projects like True Detective had previously succeeded in blurring the lines of what actors typically considered for television. He explained that he was not actively pursuing acting roles during that period, instead exploring more leadership-oriented or writing opportunities. While he acknowledged the quality of The Last of Us, he stated it was not the right fit for him at that moment, especially when compared to a singular film project like The Rivals of Amziah King, which he found to be exceptionally specific and contained within a single movie.

Craig Mazin had previously discussed his conversations with McConaughey on the same podcast in 2023, characterizing the discussions as preliminary rather than serious. Mazin expressed confidence that McConaughey would have been excellent in the role, but suggested the portrayal would have differed, and he was pleased with the final casting.

Pedro Pascal ultimately took on the role of Joel, a decision that proved highly successful with both audiences and critics. Mazin revealed that Pascal was an initial consideration, but availability was uncertain. A call from Pascal's agent indicated his potential availability, and after receiving the script, Pascal expressed immediate enthusiasm, agreeing to a Zoom call the following morning.

While the first season of The Last of Us garnered widespread acclaim, the second season faced a more mixed reception, particularly concerning the portrayal of Ellie. Neil Druckmann, co-president of Naughty Dog, has shifted his focus from the show to the studio's upcoming game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. HBO has confirmed that The Last of Us will conclude with a third season, a development that has led some fans to speculate about a potential third game in the series, aligning with Druckmann's past comments.
