Matthew Mercer Reveals Critical Role Encounter That Nearly Wiped the Party

Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer has shared that a particular encounter in Critical Role's third campaign, "Bells Hells," came closer to a total party kill than any other in the show's history. The harrowing fight against Otohan Thull, a level 20 human fighter, in episode 33, "Blood and Dust," pushed the players to their limits and nearly resulted in the demise of the entire adventuring party.

The Perilous Battle

The Bells Hells infiltrated the headquarters of the Paragon's Call mercenary group to rescue Armand Treshi, unaware that the group was collaborating with the Ruby Vanguard and its formidable member, Otohan Thull. Upon Thull's appearance, the situation rapidly escalated. She destroyed the party's sand crawler escape vehicle in mere moments and incapacitated Ashton Greymoore with a devastating three-hit attack. Her ability to summon shadowy minions further amplified the threat, presenting an overwhelming challenge for the party.

Faced with Thull's immense power and the chaotic dust storm serving as cover, the Bells Hells found themselves in a dire situation. While some members, like Chetney and Orym, attempted to fight back, they were quickly knocked unconscious. Thull's primary objective was to force Imogen into succumbing to her Ruidusborne powers. This relentless pressure and Thull's brutal effectiveness led to panic among some party members, resulting in Fearne, Orym, and Laudna being killed. Chetney and Ashton were also downed but only unconscious. Thull retreated after Imogen yielded to her Ruidusborne abilities, unleashing a storm that devastated several buildings in Bassuras.

The Aftermath and Impact

With only one Revivify spell remaining, FCG was forced to make a critical choice. He used it on Fearne, who in turn revived Orym, leaving Laudna to die for the second time. This near-TPK had a profound impact on the campaign and the players involved.

Mercer himself cited this encounter as one of his favorite moments as Dungeon Master, appreciating the palpable fear and the realization among players that the challenge had surpassed their immediate capabilities. He acknowledged that the fight was so dangerous that a TPK was a very real possibility, dependent entirely on the dice rolls. The gravity of the situation, even with Thull as a singular opponent, left a lasting impression on the party.

The encounter influenced the party's approach to future challenges, leading to more cautious preparation and seeking aid from allies. Laudna's death, in particular, was a significant moment for Imogen, contributing to her eventual realization of romantic feelings for her companion. Ultimately, the near-TPK served as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of Dungeons & Dragons, where a single dice roll can dramatically alter the course of events and the weight of every decision.
