Matthew Needham, known for his role as Larys Strong in 'House of the Dragon,' is the latest actor to voice the Joker in Prime Video's 'Batman: Caped Crusader' season 2, and he has brought a distinctly different interpretation to the character. Needham described his portrayal as a "real big swing" that aims for respect while deviating from typical expectations of the villain.

This new iteration of the Joker is characterized by a calm, calculating demeanor, a stark contrast to the often manic energy associated with the character. He operates from the shadows for much of the season, manipulating Gotham's criminal element before unleashing chemical weapons. Needham emphasized that this Joker is always in control, pushing Batman to confront his own violent tendencies. "Rather than maniacal, this Joker always seems fully in control as he pushes Batman to his limits and tries to bring out his darkest and most violent tendencies," the actor stated.

The most striking departure in Needham's performance is the Joker's voice, which carries a German-inflected accent and a flat affect. This directorial choice stemmed from the audition materials, which specified the character should be "European and humorless." Needham noted that while he developed his own ideas about the Joker's origins, he believes leaving them intentionally vague enhances the character's impact.

For inspiration, Needham looked to Tony Beckley's unsettling performance in the 1979 thriller 'When a Stranger Calls.' He found the quiet, softly spoken menace of Beckley's character far more frightening than a loud, overtly aggressive one, aiming to imbue his Joker with a similar unsettling presence.

'Caped Crusader' also leans into the complex relationship between Batman and Joker, with Needham's Joker referring to the Dark Knight as "brother." The producers described the pair as "two broken mirrors," with the Joker seeking to drive Batman toward his ultimate, perhaps darker, form. Needham also alluded to shared conceptualizations of the Joker's origins with executive producer and screenwriter Geoffrey Thorne, suggesting a deeper connection between the adversaries than often portrayed.

Regarding the potential for Harley Quinn's inclusion, Needham expressed that while the character was originally introduced as Joker's partner in 'Batman: The Animated Series,' she has proven her strength and ability to exist independently. He noted that in 'Caped Crusader,' Dr. Harleen Quinzel operates separately, even teaming up with Batman against Scarecrow in season 2, and suggested that Harley doesn't need to be paired with the Joker to thrive.

When comparing his roles as Larys Strong and the Joker, Needham sees a significant difference in their malevolence. He described Larys as a "wounded animal" acting out of self-preservation within a harsh environment. In contrast, Needham views the Joker as a more profound force of evil, stating, "Joker's just the devil, basically. Larys is a product of his environment, and the Joker is the environment. He's this force of nature."
