The highly anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto 6 is drawing near, with its launch scheduled for November 19. This marks the first main installment in the series since Grand Theft Auto V in 2013, and anticipation for a return to Vice City has been immense. However, a significant contender is set to debut just a week prior: Metaphor: ReFantazio, the award-winning RPG from the Persona series creators, is scheduled for release on the Nintendo Switch 2 on November 12.
This release date places Metaphor: ReFantazio directly against the massive hype surrounding GTA 6, with digital preloads for Rockstar's title becoming available on the same day. The Nintendo Switch 2 version is a port of the original game, which garnered widespread critical acclaim following its 2024 release. It received accolades such as Best Roleplaying Game of the Year at the 2024 Game of the Year Awards and recognition at the 2025 Japan Game Awards, holding a Metacritic score of 94 and earning Game of the Year honors from outlets like IGN and GameSpot.
Metaphor: ReFantazio is set in the United Kingdom of Euchronia, where the assassination of the king triggers a Royal Tournament to determine his successor. Players assume the role of a young protagonist named Will, tasked with navigating this political landscape. Polygon reviewer Chelsea Stark described the game in 2024 as a "finely crafted triumph," praising its art direction and character animation. "Every piece of Metaphor: ReFantazio’s art and visual design feels high touch," Stark wrote. "Characters stride about in brilliant outfits that highlight their tribe’s angel wings or dog tails."
The game is available for $39.99, and a demo is currently accessible on Nintendo's website.
