A new gameplay trailer for Metro 2039, revealed at Gamescom Opening Night Live, showcases a bleak post-apocalyptic world and hints at the grim realities players will face upon its February 2027 release.

The trailer highlights a new regime that has risen from the ashes of nuclear war, presenting a stark departure from the monster-focused threats of previous entries. While mutated creatures and ghouls will still inhabit the radioactive surface and dangerous metro tunnels, developer 4A Games is emphasizing the atrocities humans are capable of committing in this installment.

Developers described Metro 2039 as a narrative centered on consequences, exploring the cost of silence, the horror of tyranny, and the price of freedom. This theme is reportedly influenced by the studio's experience developing the game amidst the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The game introduces a new protagonist known as the Stranger. The former force for good, the Spartan Order, has devolved into the authoritarian Novareich movement, now led by Hunter, the Spartan Ranger from Metro 2033. The Stranger emerges from exile to journey through the ruins of Moscow with the objective of dismantling the Novareich and confronting Hunter.

4A Games suggests that Metro 2039 will require players to master exploration, survival, combat, and stealth to achieve the Stranger's goals. Despite being a sequel, the studio asserts that it will serve as an accessible entry point for newcomers to the series. Metro 2039 is slated for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in February 2027.
