A free next-gen update for Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux is set to arrive on October 22 for PC and October 29 for consoles. This update coincides with the Metro franchise surpassing 50 million copies sold worldwide, 16 years after the original Metro 2033's debut.
The studio emphasizes that this update is not a full remaster or remake, but rather an enhancement of the original Metro Redux experience. The updates will introduce 4K textures across all platforms, improved animations, higher-quality audio, and more detailed environments. The enhancements also include a selection of community-requested bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements.
For PlayStation 5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X/S, the update will bring native support with platform-specific features. This includes PSSR on PS5 Pro, TSR upscaling and anti-aliasing on Xbox Series X, and spatial audio for Xbox platforms. Console players can expect native 4K/60fps performance or upscaled 4K/120fps on compatible displays. Further upgrades include improved lighting, shadows, and particle effects, alongside DualSense Adaptive Triggers and Xbox Impulse Triggers. Both platforms will also see hardware tessellation and displacement, and power-saving modes.
Xbox users will benefit from Play Anywhere and handheld support. On PC, the update adds DLSS support, along with its own spatial audio and quality-of-life fixes. Full patch notes will be released on launch day.
The update will be free for all existing owners of Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux on PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, Windows Store, and GOG, as well as for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S owners.
This update also serves as a prelude to Metro 2039, which is scheduled for release on February 4. Early impressions of Metro 2039 highlight its competent shooter mechanics, remarkable graphics, and a story inspired by real-world events. The game aims to evoke a crushing sense of claustrophobia and threat, making previous entries in the series feel comparatively serene.
