Nintendo has officially revealed Metroid Ravenous, the latest installment in the 2D Metroid series. The game was announced during a recent Nintendo Direct presentation and is slated for release on January 28, 2027.
Set after the events of Metroid Dread, Metroid Ravenous appears to follow Samus Aran as she explores an alien moon. A trailer for the game featured Samus stating, "I was attacked by unknown assailants and sustained grave injuries. I don't know where I am. Getting back to the surface won't be easy. My chances of getting off this moon are slim at best. Still – I will survive. And I will make it home. Even if I have to feed on my enemies to do so. It's eat or be eaten."
Gameplay footage showcased Samus facing several cloaked, hat-wearing figures and falling into desert sands, necessitating a climb back to the surface. New mechanics include a dash that allows Samus to warp through walls, the ability to run on water, a return of the parry mechanic seen in Metroid Dread, and a signature energy siphoning ability. This new power allows Samus to absorb the life force from her enemies, causing them to dissipate.
The game's impending release date places it as a significant entry for early 2027 in the long-running Metroid franchise.
